I have been experimenting with adding textures as layers in GIMP. The textures i have been using are from flickr, "les brumes" created by an artist whose work I actually find pretty awesome. In this image, the left side applied the texture as a difference layer and the right, as a value layer in Gimp. I added the borders to each separately, then combined for the finished pic and added a unified border to the whole thing. Putting them side by side required adjustment of canvas size.
In my textural explorations, I am most inclined to use my self portraits and/or botanical shots. Partially because they tend to be at once simpler and more artsy than many of my other photos, and partially because I feel more at liberty to manipulate "reality" with these subjects.

The shot itself is from a series of self portraits against a plain white wall in my room in the guest house in New Delhi. My camera was my best friend and greatest amusement in India!
