The following were all created while I was enrolled in the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. It was the first time I really tried much mixed media exploration (partially because the school promoted it. It was also the beginning of more in-depth exploration of self-portraiture using photography. I suppose the whole series represents themes of literature, music, nature, art. and religion and relating myself to those themes, as I consider them to be central to my core being... despite my always more prosaic studies and occupations as biology major, science and math teacher, etc. etc.
I was disenchanted with SMFA, coming off a year as a mission teacher in Belize, largely because of the secular nature of the people with whom I came in contact. I particular, seeing the religious nature in a lot of my work, my advisor assumed and pushed me toward disavowal of Catholicism rather than a celebration or even neutral reflection. Had I been more mature, this might have bothered me less ;). In any case, then as now, I respond to my instincts and am currently trying to do that more, with less consideration in the moment of what images mean and represent.
